Sketchbook Piece
from EDUC 5930

This piece is one of the most time consuming of my sketchbook pieces. I used acrylic paints, embroidery, and shrinking films to create this look. Except for the acrylic paints, I had never used any of the other two techniques before. The prompt for this piece is: How might we use music, drama, theater & film to deepen social studies disciplinary knowledge? I was originally inspired by the uniform flexibility of these art forms; whether it's music, drama, theater, or film, they all require endless creativity on the creator's part. The waves' lines would be an appropriate demonstration for this.

The process of making this work is not only a way for me to utilize what I have learned, but also a way for me to enjoy the freedom of artistic creation. For me, it was a bold attempt to combine art and theoretical knowledge by utilizing techniques that I have never tried before. This is also the reason why I chose to exhibit this work. I have always considered myself a person with little artistic ability, but this work made me realize my possibilities. When I finished this piece, my first thought was: Did I really make this? This was really unbelievable. I hadn't made a piece that excited me this much in years. After the excitement passed, what emerged was a deep sense of gratitude. It was Dr. Broderick's class that gave me my creativity back. I hope that every time I look at this work again, it will revitalize my confidence and point me in the right direction.
